Tiny North Cove had the ignominious title of most eroded coastline in the USA hence the name.
The story is that over a century the beach and town were overrun by enormous ocean waves that claimed one hundred feet yearly consuming 80% of the town since the beginning of the 20th century. In around the 1980’s a local observed that the sand woud accumulate within the larger beach rocks and broken concrete and would eventually form a small dune. Once the theory took hold the effort was put behind it to enlist the state and federal government to build loosely stacked rock piles, some as tall as 30 feet to collect the sand from the giant incoming waves. As decades passed the sand deposits became dunes with coastal grasses and broom rooted onto the dune and the remainder of the town was saved.
